November rain total recorded here on the shores of Lake Arenal near the pueblo of Nuevo Arenal in the middle of the rain forest is 23.4"! And we've already recorded almost 6" for December. Yes, it's raining. If you've been following the LakeCam at all you've probably noticed that there hasn't been much change from day to day for a while. Of course, having spent several days in San Jose, there was a lapse of updates this week. Not only that but the Great Auk is gathering dust (and probably a few spider webs)! Just something wrong with that.
We get many visitors here who search for weather conditions around Lake Arenal. That's one of the reasons for the LakeCam so you can see what we see outside and judge for yourself. Hopefully it gives you an idea of our variations in climate. If there are any weather buffs heading our way, we'd appreciate you bringing one of those fancy weather stations with you and we'll publish more detailed information. Let us know if you'd be willing to do this, send us a note to info at arenalkayaks.com and we'll work out the details.
With our possibly above average rainfall the lake is quickly filling up. The level has already surpassed last year's high water mark by at least a meter and we expect at least another meter or more before the rain lets up. The peninsula at the city park is very close to becoming an island for the first time in 5-years!
What this means is there will be expanded areas to explore that haven't been open for the last 5 years. There are several ravines/canyons and rivers that open up when the lake is high and a kayak is the best way to explore these parts of the jungle. There's one little ravine we've visited in the past up near Rio Aguacate that is only passable via kayak or canoe. The jungle is thick and hangs over the water. We've seen the otters near the entrance and of course the occasional tribe of monkeys in the trees. Once in a while a bright green vine snake crossing the water. Pretty cool!
Although the weather is generally bad for kayaking, we still get some dry spells. Enough to get out for a couple of hours anyways so don't let the overcast and dripping skies scare you away. Come on down! Let's kayak!

Get those cobbwebs out of your baby, and let's get wet this next week. Any day is great on the lake, Volcano view or not. Thanks for the sunny shot today.
